Bellydancing, Arabic Drumming and African Drumming Workshops
Midnight Oasis presents:
Anne Harkin
Darabouka and Djembe Percussionist
and
Mel Rogers
Underbelly Dance Studios - Melbourne
Mel Rogers, a principal dancer and teacher from Underbelly Studios
Melbourne, and Anne Harkin, percussion performer and teacher, also
from Underbelly, combine here to illustrate the intimate relationship
between music and movement in the Arabic style.
Mel displays a wide range of styles within the Arabic genre, ranging
from gypsy-folkloric, to classical, through to funky, techno hiphop.
Her exquisitely detailed and original costumes are all of her own
design and making.
Anne Harkin shows a remarkable affinity with the Middle Eastern
drum or “darabouka”, from which she coaxes an amazing variety of
sounds. Together they will perform a number of drum solos in which
Mel interprets every little beat in her precise and impeccable style.
Anne also plays the African Djembe and is skilled at clearly transmitting
the mechanics and feel of African rhythms.
Bellydance
DRUM SOLO

Fitness Works Lifestyle Centre –
Aerobics Room, 69 Progress Drive, Nightcliff
12.30-2.30pm Saturday 21st August Cost $44.00 Incl GST
The art of the belly dance has been described as ‘visually hearing
Middle Eastern music’ and nowhere is this better demonstrated than
in the relationship between the sharp rhythms of a darabukka (Arabic
drum) player and the precise accents of a dancer.
In the first one and a half hours of this two hour workshop Mel
will explain the significance of this relationship and guide students
through a snappy and exciting drum choreography that explores different
ways of ‘visually’ interpreting the rhythms.
In the last half hour students will have the opportunity to dance
to a live rendition of the drum piece provided by Anne Harkin and
her percussion students. Both drumming and dancing students have
the opportunity of performing this piece at the Darwin Student Hafla
(performance is optional).
Exploring the Four Elements
in Middle Eastern Dance
Two 2 Hour Workshops:
The four elements – earth, air, water, and fire – can be represented
in Middle Eastern dance through different movement, expression,
music, emotion and style. In a series of four 1 hour workshops Mel
will conduct an in depth exploration into each element with a short
choreography.
EARTH AND AIR
Fitness Works Lifestyle Centre –
Aerobics Room, 69 Progress Drive, Nightcliff
11.30-1.30pm Sunday 22nd August Cost $44.00 Incl GST
EARTH - A fun, folkloric/tribal style emphasizing heavy hip movements,
strong arms, hand gestures, and a grounded stance.
AIR - The delicacy of the Classical Egyptian style focusing on
the upper body, graceful arms and hands and a combination between
subtle and sweeping movements done on the toes.
WATER AND FIRE
Fitness Works Lifestyle Centre –
Aerobics Room, 69 Progress Drive, Nightcliff
2.30-3.30pm Sunday 22nd August Cost $44.00 Incl GST
WATER - A sensuous and rippling style that includes some floor
work and muscular based internal movements such as undulations and
rolls.
FIRE - Fast-paced and passionate gypsy dance with turns, hops,
and quick energetic movements with Turkish and Spanish influences.
Bring a flounced circle skirt for ‘Fire’.
SWORD WORKSHOP
Fitness Works Lifestyle Centre –
Aerobics Room, 69 Progress Drive, Nightcliff
7.30-9.30pm Monday 23rd August Cost $44.00 Incl GST
The use of the sword in Middle Eastern dance is a powerful and
dramatic display that demonstrates the fascinating combination between
the dangerous strength of the weapon with the supple sensuality
of the dancer’s body. In this two hour workshop Mel will teach the
skills of sword usage including stance, poise, balance and movement.
A short choreography will be taught with an emphasis on creating
a strong stage presence and developing confidence with the sword.
Bring either a well-balanced sword or cane. Wear comfortable pants
or leggings.
Please note:
To ensure quality time is achieved in all workshops arrive no later
than 10mins beforehand to stretch and warm yourselves up. Mel will
provide only a short collective warm-up at the start of each workshop
so she can fit everything else in! However, a longer cool-down and
stretch will be conducted by Mel at the end of each workshop.
